So we arrived in Phnom Pehn after a 7hr bus ride from Siem Reap, and it wasnt such a bad journey, i slept most the way. Although i do enjoy looking out the window and seeing all the different houses and activities going on. Ive never seen so many cows on the side of the road before or dogs! Also there were some dead pigs hanging off the back of a moped, and a load of dead chickens, ive also seen a dead dog. A much Different bus journey then Stagecoach!
We found a guesthouse almost straight away in the City after being surrounded by a load of tuk tuk drivers offering their services! We then had a wander down to the Mekong river and watched the (cloudy) sunset, then got very lost and very hungry. After that i decided i did not like where we were. It was dirty, smelly and our room was damp although very spacious for the 4 of us. The day after(Weds 5th) we went to the killing fields, which was quite a drive out. It was so quiet and eerry and i just couldnt get my head around the mass killings that happened here. In the middle they have built a tower and enclosed in it is 800 skulls of the victims. They are only the minority that have been found so far. Pol pot ended up massacaring around 2million residents of Cambodia and beyond. Afterwards we went to the Tuol Sleng museum where the people where taken to be interogated and tortured before being taken off to the killing fields. It was a school before the take over, and a few rooms were still left as they had been with an iron bed in with the equipment used to harness them down. Also on the wall was a picture of the person whilst the torture was happening. It was horrible. There were also rooms just filled with mugshots of the many men, women and children that were tortured. That night i got really homesick for the first time and had lots of ''Emily'' moments, i also wasnt very well. The next day we visited the Royal Palace in the morning, nothing special and then moved on.
The 4hr bus ride to Sihanokville was the slowest yet, my ipod jammed and i couldnt sleep. Also i had one of the worst experiences yet. A child had a minor tantrum, she was probably only about 2yrs old. The grandmother and mother turned on the girl and beat her. After they finished the girl clung to her mum sobbing and the mum and grandmother were comparing the redness of their hands! It was so dreadful. Eventually we arrived in Sihanoukville and headed towards serendipity beach, we found a guesthouse not far along from it and just off the beach. it was perfect! We soon headed down onto the front and hgad dinner and drinks. We had a Baileys 'happy'' Shake only to realise when it arrived what they meant by happy! Looking around us everyone was eating '"happy'" pizza or drinking "'happy"" shakes lol. This was a lively place. We walked along the beach more with the water lapping over our feet to discover many more bars...We had another early night. I have not stayed up later than midnight yet because we are so tired! This morning we ventured onto the beach and laid there basking in the heat of the sun and swimming in the hot sea..untill it started monsooning! So now i am here waiting for the rain to stop so we can go and have some dinner.
