We left Bangkok (at 6.45am!) to go on a 3 day tour in Kanachaburi (west of Bangkok). First we stopped off at the bridge over the river Kwai and went to the war museum and the cemetary - That bridge really is very dangerous, holes everywhere! Then we took a train along the flimsy railway that actually bent as the train ran over it. That aternoon we did a treck (well more of a little walk but it felt like a treck i thet heat) along the hellfire pass that the prisoners of war had had to dig out of the rock. We had tea in a floating restaurant then went to our dwellings for the night by boat. Our little shack was amazing! It was a floating wooden house with a little tin bathroom and a cold shower...cosy really!
The following day we went to the Erwin National Park and saw lots of lovely waterfalls, swam in them too. It was just like in the films apart from loads of Thai people wanted to take pictiures of us in our bikinis, which was a bit weird! That afternoon after lunch in the floating resaurant we had one of the most terrifying experiences so far when we went in 'the cave'. It was just the two of us as the rest of our group were doing other things. We were dropped off at the mouth of the cave and left with our non-english speaking guide who led us with a gas lantern into tiny passageways deep deep down into the earth. The stalagmites and stalactites were very impressive but may not have been worth the ordeal. The best part was when a bat flew past Emily's head - she really loves the flying things! We hastily escaped the dungeon and can only describe it as something out of a Indiana Jones film!
We made friends with some Austrailians and some Yorkshire lasses that night (we really do get everywhere) and stayed up dringing beers on our floating hotel in the middle of a tropical rain storm!
The next morning we took a bamboo raft down the river and got slightly concerned when our driver jumped off the bout, but it was ok cos he got back on. Also had to cross a very precarious bridge (another indiana Jones moment). Then we went for our last activity which was elephant riding. Ours was called Young Lady (altough it was male) and was ridden by a really funny 14 year old boy called Game who kept singing the Black Eyed Peas. It got a bit hot on that elephant!
