Today was a bucket list day. Not only did Dan and I get to see the Grand Canyon but we also drove on part of old Route 66 (yes, both of us, I did it too, yay!) BTW, for this blog entry's title to have any chance of working you have to saying it in a Kiwi accent...
We started the day with a hearty breakfast at Cruiser's Route 66 Cafe (http://www.cruisers66.com). I was pretty pleased with this place as I saw it on Google maps and decided to give it a go and it turned out to be excellent. The service was brilliant and our food arrived very quickly. Our server (who I think might have been the owner) let me take a few snaps of the restaurant, which was decorated like a 1950s American Diner and was full of items giving a nod to that era. Dan was particularly impressed with the gent's loo and took probably his first (and hopefully last) photo of a urinal. The bathroom was kitted out with reclaimed car parts and the urinal dividers where car doors - to be fair, that's pretty neat.
After breakfast it was time to head over to the Grand Canyon. The drive from Cruisers was simple as you just head out of town on Route 66 East and stay on that road when it changes to Route 64. That'll take you all the way to Grand Canyon National Park.
To say the Grand Canyon was impressive would be the understatement of the century. I still can't comprehend the vastness of what we saw and we only stopped in a few places to take a look, so there is still a lot to see on another visit. If you do visit, make sure and stop by the visitor center which has large 3D map of the canyon on the wall as well as information on various hikes.
As well as the canyon there are several interesting structures to visit in Grand Canyon National Park. We saw Hopi House, which served as a residence for the Hopi Indians, and Desert View Watchtower, which is the highest point on the south rim.
The drive from Grand Canyon National Park was long, straight and in the dark. Best not attempted when tired...
PHRASES COINED TODAY: "Clipp Chiffmunk": Like a Cliff Chipmunk but with said when tired...
"You're welcome": used by overly polite wait staff. The game was to try and get a "You're welcome" rally going... Easier than it sounds
