I have reached paradise!
Fraser Island the largest sand island and what an amazing place! I think we picked the best weekend for the trip, the sun was shining with nothing but blue skies! A great tour guide and a fantastic small group. 12 of us in total all aboard the 4WD bus, like something from an American alien invasion fillm! We chose the organised tour rather than the self drive for ease and comfort! We didnt fancy 11 people crammed into a small 4WD, I imagine that things could turn for the worst after a couple of hours together in the heat!
The tour included accomodation which was like luxury after spending weeks in hostels sharing a room with 11 others! Sharing showers and living in bunk-beds (which are still great fun, like being a kid again! but sometimes its nice to have your own room and space!) Ensuite facilities and a room big enough for 10! Amazing food too! Of which I took full advanatge, you have to stock up as you dont know where your next meal is coming from! Buffet breakfast, dinner and tea! It really was heaven!
Fraser Island offers beauty everywhere you turn! It truely is natures magic! Fresh water lakes, champagne pools, 75 mile beach complete with ship wreck! Golden sands, white sands, coloured sands all unbelievable! Then theres the rainforest, a remarkable environment. Plenty of time to experience each environment at your own speed with just enough of each activity, travelling aboard the bus getting thrown around in your seat as it takes on the dry sand being sure not to get bogged! Walking options to get close to nature and really experience the place hands on, then time to relax in the lakes and pools! Plenty of chance to get to know your group mates during the day and then again in the evening at the bar (well it'd be rude not to indulge!)
Lake Mackenzie was the highlight of the tour for everyone involved! I dont think I have seen anywhere more stunning and beautiful anywhere in the world! When the lake opens up before you its what I imagine steppinginto heaven would be like! The white sand accompanied with the aqua blue water was dream like! Its a place I'd be happy to stay indefinately!
Dingos roam freely and can smell food a mile off, the advice is not to carry any food with you anywhere if you want a better chance of survival! We were lucky enough to come across a Dingo on our travels, they look so cute but once they want something they usually get it!
The opportunity to watch the sunrise on the second day was fantastic (I was however the only one to get up for it!) A 4.45 start led to a lond day, but a fantastic one at that! The sun slowly showing itself across the sea with the waves crashing up on the sand was magnificent! Well worth the early start! The flies however were not!!! Bring bug spray with you on this trip or a fly swatter is just as affective! They are big b*****s these flies and their bite can leave nasty marks!!
The tour of Fraser Island not only gave us the opportunity to experience a very different environment to anywhere we've been before but also the opportunity to see my first wild Dingo and snake!! Very exciting! Ive never seen a snake in the wild before and they look so peaceful as they glide passed not interested in anyone (until it feels threatened obviouasly!) I have heard the Brown Snakes actually chase you!! that would be something aye! Not something I fancy experiencing myself though!
Everywhere you look on Fraser Island there is something else of great beauty, it really ios a paradise and I was sad to be leaving the Island after only 2 days! Next time I would look to stay longer as it truely is worth it!!
