Took a while to get to Kuantan, on a rickety old bus, and first impressions were not great. And they did not get better. We checked into our 'hotel' and then went for a wander. About the only thing of interest was the mosque, the largest on the east coast. Other than that, our saviour was the shopping mall, if only for Starbucks, a cinema, and air-con.
In the end we were so bored we watched a movie, that was actually quite amusing, then headed back to the hotel, only to find that it was crawling with cockroaches, had toilets that flushed over the floor, and was incredibly loud. Lucky us.
Needless to say, we checked out first thing (having seriously considered checking out at 11pm the night before) and into a slightly nicer place down the road. We then headed off to Tasik Chini, the reason we were in Kuantan in the first place. It was a 2 hour bus ride, and then we had to 'hire' a car; in other words, get fleeced by the locals to drop us 10k down the road.
Sadly to say, there really wasn't much to see, so after a couple of hours, we decided to walk back to the bus stop. About 2k up the road, a car with a young family in passed by and offered to take us to the stop. We hesitantly agreed, and they actually ended up taking us all the way back to Kuantan, which was a result.
Anyway, we spent the rest of the night relaxing in the room, as it was so nice compared to the last one. Then tomorrow, we're off to our next stop, Kuala Terengganu.
