Today was an pretty easy day. The only reason I was tired was because I was sore. To start the day off we drove about two hours to the city of Brotherly Love. Philadelphia is Latin for brotherly love which I learned today. The first thing we did was run up the Rocky stairs. I was little disappointed when I didn't win because I really wanted the prize the winner got, although I know that's a little childish. The prize was a shirt Marianne got for the winner that had Rocky on it. I could have gotten it but I didn't pack enough money. Then we went to take pictures with the Rocky statue then to lunch. Lunch was at a market place. It was cool, confusing, and tough. It was cool to see all the Amish food stalls and see them in the clothes they wear everyday. They weren't costumes! They were really Amish. It was confusing because it's this big market, cramped and filled with all kinds of different food stalls. The tough thing was that it was hard to get around because there would be people waiting in lines in the walk way on both sides leaving you about three feet to get around people going the opposite direction. I got a turkey and cheese sandwich on a croissant from an Amish stand. It was delicious. After lunch we took a tour of Philadelphia. We went and saw Benjamin Franklin's grave and statue. I wish we could have gone in and seen it. It also wasn't like I thought it would be. I thought he would have like a statue by it or maybe a monument not just a piece of slab with his name engraved on it. Then we took a tour of Independence Hall. I learned a lot about it, like how it was where John Adams was deemed President and it was the first peaceful passing of power from one person to another without one dying in the world. I thought that was fascinating. Then we went to a shopping mall for an hour just to kill time. I bought a magnet which I have done for every place we have been. After the mall we went to Potbelly for dinner. I thought it was okay but I have had better. There I got a turkey and cheese sandwich. I wasn't thinking at lunch that we would have a sandwich at dinner because I was so overwhelmed with all the choices at the Amish market. A little while after dinner we got on the bus and are driving to Washington D.C. Today I encountered a lot of homeless people. I have encountered them before in Santa Fe, New Mexico. But not this many before. They are almost everywhere. It took most of my will power to ignore them because I feel bad for them. But it also makes me feel grateful that I'm not in their situation. Our tour director Marianne affected my learning by making it fun! She would do competitions with us. And shockingly I got third place in one. It was where you had to take a picture of the Statue of Liberty and say how it made you feel. I took a picture that makes it look like you are looking up at her. I just said that I liked the picture and it made me feel good. I guess that touched her heart. I won a cute pen. Another competition was a race up the Rocky stairs which I talked about earlier. Marianne would also tell us about the history about a lot of buildings which we passed while driving. I thought that was nice. Jeff, the tour director we got today, was okay. He didn't talk about some buildings as much as I would have liked him to. But I guess that's because we just met him today and it will be the only day we see him and we didn't see a whole lot of Philly. Philly is different than from Norman. It's like Boston with its rich history. But it has a huge homeless population unlike Norman. I rarely see homeless people on the streets in Norman. This goes for Boston and NYC but I thought that there were a lot of people smoking. I just don't see people in Norman walking around smoking. I could be wrong though. I had some interactions with locals. Mostly homeless people asking for money or for me to buy them food. That made me not want to live in Philadelphia. Over all it was a good day. I'm really excited for Washington D.C.!
