Saigon and Mekong Delta tour:
Into Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon for the locals) and on to Cambodia via the Mekong Delta. Saigon is a buzzing, beeping, steaming metropolis that cannot seem to sleep. I had been here for an exhibition last year and immediately liked the place and the people as it is much the same as China. There's always someone who's in a hurry to get something somewhere done and get it done BEFORE you do whatever it is that you want to get done. Some people don't like it as it's very much in your face.
I love globalization. Here's why: We book into a USD 10 per night hotel after an 8 hour bus trip from Dalat. I switch on the TV and flip through the channels. Suddenly I hear a South African accent and I see that the channel is on Supersport 1 and the rugby test between SA and Italy is about to start.
All the hotels have Supersport 1, 2 and 3 as it's probably the cheapest premier sport channels to get via satellite.
Anyway, on to the Mekong for a 3 day excursion into Vietnam's food belt and also a border crossing into Cambodia. The Mekong is HUGE.
Then we spent 8 hours on a boat to get from Vietnam to Cambodia and another 1.5 hours on a bus and we arrived in Phnom Penh.
Sorry if the end of this post doesn't seem sexy or exciting, but life on the road is sometimes as mundane as sitting in your office reading this when you should be working...
