Hello from Melbourne! One month through our adventure and we have hit Australia. We landed early Thursday morning and made our way to the hostel, which is really nice and new and really centrally located as well. We were too early to check in so we left our bags and went for a little explore. We both immediately agreed that we liked Melbourne. We first went to federation square and to the visitor centre to collect millions of leaflets. The sun was out but there was definitely a bit of a chill in the air at a mere 18 degrees..I thought Australia was supposed to be hot?!
Melbourne is apparently known for the many lanes that cut through the main streets which are very cool, with each one packed with small cafés and restaurants. We went to one for lunch and soaking up the cafe culture. On our wanderings we stopped to watch a band perform on the street, who were so good we bought tickets to see them tonight! Our plan for that evening was to go and watch an outside production of A Midsummer Nights Dream which we got half price tickets for. Really great show, really funny and busy with locals and school trips.
Today we had a lovely lie in, and then met up with Mel who was on exchange for 3 months in Lancaster last year, and her friend Josie. We had a milkshake and cake in a cafe and it was great to catch up after a year! In the afternoon we headed to the Richmond area which was full of discount stores so grabbed a couple of bargains - you can never have too many pairs of shoes right?!
