It's been a busy week!
Monday:
We sorted out SIM cards, which turned out to be significantly harder than we'd anticipated. We had to wait for my SIM card to arrive in the post - Edd got one on the spot as they hadn't set one up for him yet anyway. Apparently an account being 'approved' was different to being 'processed' in the sense that our account had been 'approved' for a week, but no one had 'processed' it yet, so we still had to wait '3-5 days' before we'd have it in the post. They quoted '3-5 days' for basically everything; efficiency was not very high on their list of priorities.
We hired a car and went and found Edd a fabulous red Ford Falcon, at a steal, at the Ford dealership. We were going to the bank the next day, so were going to get a bank approved cheque while we were there.
I made fajitas for dinner while Edd looked up car insurance, Etags and medical aid. He enjoyed my dinner, so I was moving my cooking abilities in the right direction.
Tuesday:
It was an early start; we parked at the apartment we were going to be moving into and walked to the train station; it was cheaper to take the train in than it was to park in the CBD.
We needed to get Edd's first 'chat' (interview with an agency for work) at 9.30am and we needed to get a tram to where it was. There were no information boards at the stops, so we had no idea which side we should be on, which number was going int eh right direction and Google Maps did not register the trams, so we had to download the app Rome2Rio to get some idea of which one was going the right way. Edd got on one of the trams, to ask the driver if the tram was going in the right direction, I stayed on the platform, ready to hop on when we were given the go ahead, but the doors shut and the tram left the platform with Edd on it and me, well, not. I called him and he told me to get onto the next tram and get to the next stop, just further down from where I was. He jumped on my tram, which turned out to be the right one and we got to his first interview just in time. Tram drivers were nothing like bus drivers in England, noted.
We both had interviews at 11am and went in opposite directions, joining up at 13.30 at ANZ bank for another long set up session. I was an hour late, underestimating how long it would take to sign up with an agency, so joined Edd in time to set up a Super Fund (pension).
We were then fetched by one of the Ford dealers and taken to the dealership, cheque in hand, to collect Edd's car. We drove back to Sandringham to fetch the hire car and then went home. It had been a long and productive day and we were absolutely exhausted.
Wednesday:
We did a bit of shopping as our clothes were not going to be delivered for another 2 weeks and it seemed like Edd would probably start working the next Monday; we only had the clothes we'd been travelling in and 1 pair of jeans with 2 shirts that his mum had posted out for us. We found a shop that sold clothes 30% off, with a buy one get the second one half price, deal on. So we took advantage and got 2 pairs of trousers and 4 shirts (orginally wanting 3 shirts, but got a 4th as it was the sale offer).
Thursday:
This was the first day we didn't actually have anything on, so we caught up on sleep and went into the CBD around 2pm after walking down Hampton high street and having my eyebrows waxed. We met up with some friends that we'd made in Cambodia and had a drink with them, while we caught up. We were still home by 8.30pm though, not exactly party animals at the best of times.
Friday:
We had appoints at the traffic department at 10am to have our licenses converted. That done, we went to my hair appointment, which lasted longer than Edd could have imagined. On the bright side, I'd managed to find a hairdresser that didn't charge the earth and was very personable, which was a relief.
We then went and fetched my car and made our way home in peak hour traffic. We left my car at the service suite and packed a bag with a few extra bits, as we were going to a BBQ at our new apartment with our new flatmates and their friends.
Saturday:
We'd stayed at our new apartment the night before and were dressed and ready at 10am. We made our way back to the service suite, packed up our lives, for the last time, and cleaned up.
We then went to the shops to buy groceries and a few bits and pieces we'd need for our room, getting to our new home mid afternoon.
Edd scrubbed the bathroom to within an inch of its life and I unpacked the groceries in the kitchen, then turning my attention to walk in wardrobe and our boxes and bags that needed to be put in drawers, on shelves and hung up.
I made butter chicken with basmati rice and corn on the cob (for starters), which Edd enjoyed. (Thats the second meal he's enjoyed without criticism, I'm on a winning streak). We both started dozing on the couch at 8.30pm and went to bed.
Sunday:
We woke up early and were about to get up and ready for the day, when we both fell asleep again and only woke up at 11am. It was a lazy day that ended in a small lamb roast; we may not be living in England any more, but we were definitely still going to be having Sunday lunch as usual.
