It was an early Sunday start, unfortunately, but we had to be up and at 'em as we were being collected at 9.30am by our new housemates, to check out the apartment we were moving into the next weekend. We had suggested walking to our new place, but the girl we were moving in with had laughed at me and said it was a closish suburb, but quite a hike to walk there. She fetched us instead.
By the time we arrived at our flat, we realised it was quite a distance to get there from where we were staying in the interim. The flat was enormous and the bedroom was big enough to fit all our furniture, with a walk in cupboard, which was the highlight of the apartment for me, other than the fact that we would be living across the road from the beach. Literally. You crossed the road, walked through the trees and the beach was right there. Amazing. We were introduced to their dog name Chilli and Edd was super excited to have a pooch to play with. (Would have been a double bonus if they'd had a cat, but there was a walk in cupboard, so it was close enough).
We then walked to the little 'high street' on the next block where the station was and had some breakfast at a local cafe. We had somehow managed to find an amazing apartment, with an en suite bathroom, walk in cupboard, ground floor with a dog, across the road from the beach and a 2 minute walk away from the station (that took 20 - 30 minutes to get us into Melbourne CBD for just $7). A place like this in London would be unaffordable and gone within the first 5 minutes of being advertised. Lucky bunnies were we.
We had breakfast at the cafe, far too much food again, and chatted with the couple that would soon be our housemates. We we collected at 11.15am by one of the Melbourne girls (the one that wasn't sick) from the cafe; she was spending the day with us, playing chauffeur.
She took us to an area where a load of independent car dealerships were situated right next to each other (much like Asia where you had 15 sandwich stands in a long line, all selling the same thing at the same price). I had decided the next car I was going to get would have an aircon and be automatic; I was sticking to the 'not older than 2010 and mileage above 100 000km's' criteria as well. I was a dealers worst nightmare.
I found a little Hyundai Getz that met all the criteria at the first place we walked into, but Edd moaned and groaned about how much he hated that type of car, that I wasn't sure buying one was such a good idea, if he was going to complain about it so much. The dealer told Edd 'Happy wife, happy life' meaning he might have to suck it up when it came to my bad taste in cars. There were loads of other cars around us though, so I decided to keep an open mind and potentially bin the Getz idea.
We carried on looking at the different dealerships and after 2 hours of searching, doubled back to the second place we'd looked at - there was an orange Ford Fiesta ST 1.6 with low km's, 2011 and still under Manufacturers warranty. It also had a drawer under the passengers seat for shoes. What a winner. We gave it a little test drive and Edd heard a noise coming from the back, the Melbourne girl and I wouldn't have noticed it, being girls, but he drew a car conclusion that it needed to be fixed before we took it home.
He drove a hard bargain with the dealer and I signed on the dotted line, hopefully get it by Wednesday. I was very excited to be driving such a shmancy car, especially since it ticked all the boxes and had a shoe drawer. What a winner.
We then went to a shopping centre close by to get a cheap jacked for Edd (our stuff had arrived in the container, but we were only going to get it in 3 weeks. It was winter in Melbourne and our warm clothes were either limited or non existent). Everyone was having a financial year end sale, so Edd got a jacked super cheap and I got some ankle boots that were also marked down loads. We then went to the grocery store and bought food for the week, then deciding to was home time; it had been a long and eventful day and we were both exhausted.
We were dropped off at our service suite 6pm, quite pleased with the days accomplishments; we were going to have to get a hire car for a couple of days until my car was ready for collection. We also had to find insurance and sign up for etags for the toll roads; we knew setting up would be hard work, but we'd underestimated how hard.
I applied for a job that had been sent to me, by the Melbourne girl we'd met in Bangkok and we only got to bed after 11.30pm - still wired from the days activities; I struggled to get to sleep, basically solving the worlds problems in my head and was still awake at 2am. It was going to be a long night.
