We got up a bit earlier, around 9am and went decided to start the day with a snorkel session. We were becoming quite seasoned in the business of snorkelling, we weren't hungry yet and needed to make up for the lack of a session the day before. Costumes on, teeth brushed, hair platted, off we go!
We swam beyond the rocks again and were aware of the fact that we were in boat highway; we'd have to keep an eye out for them. The sad thing about boat highway was that it was also a coral reef graveyard: the reason why there were sandy bits on the middle of the ocean was because it had all died and there really was nothing down there, a couple of fish here and there, otherwise just an underwater desert. So sad.
2 little fish found us interesting and weaved their way between our snorkels and masks. One gave me a little nibble, but decided I wasn't very tasty. They followed us around for almost an hour, swopping from me to Edd at regular intervals. I felt like a hump back whale with hangers-on. It was sweet though and we got a few good pics of them inspecting us and hitching a free ride under our chins.
We were out for almost 2 hours before we decided to turn around and head back to shore; Edd shook hands with a sea urchin on the way back, curious to know what their spines felt like. I thought he was mad, but took a photo all the same. We'd explored a more to the left of our private beach and hadn't really discovered anything new; there were a few people fishing off the rocks and out in canoes, but we weren't particularly sure what they were going to catch. We didn't think an angel fish would be particularly appetising and the clown fish barely left their reef hideouts.
We walked back up to our bungalow, bum gunned our gear with fresh water and then got the SD card out of the camera to see what we'd managed to catch of film, successfully. I then blogged away, still trying to catch up and Edd sat and read the news; Cip was in his usual position, on his balcony with a beer in hand - he was loving his holiday.
We decided at about 3pm to go for some not breakfast / late lunch, heading in the direction of the Italian pizza place. We missioned all the way there, only to discover that they were closed. Shucks. None of us were particularly ravenous, even though we hadn't eaten all day, so we decided to take a walk along sunrise beach to see if anything was open.
It was like a ghost town. Nothing was open. We knew we were coming in low season, but we hadn't anticipated everything being shut. Edd decided to continue walking along the beach as we would eventually end up on sunrise beach; this did occur, but we then ran out of beach and had to walk up a resort driveway and figure out how to manoeuvre our way back to Panang beach without a map. What a palaver.
2 locals in a resort truck stopped, thinking we were part of the resort we think, and gave us a lift to Panang beach, for free. Result. We then walked back to our usual dinner place, sat down and ordered noodle soup x2, Cip had stir fried chicken with cashew nuts. The food was amazing, Edd got food envy as my normal noodle soup was tastier than his ramen noodle soup (ramen noodles are like 2 minute noodles or pot noodles ).
We then went back to our bungalows, Cip resumed his position on his balcony and Edd and I got our snorkelling gear out again for a late afternoon sea wonder. We were going to turn into Merpeople at this rate! We got great videos of the sea life and even saw a pufferfish, without its puff; we'd tried, unsuccessfully, to dive a few times, but it wasn't deep enough and the current was too strong - we kept popping to the top of the water again. It was most frustrating when we were trying to get a better look at the underneath of the reefs and get good pictures.
It turned out to be a successful session and an hour later and a half later, we emerged from our marine habitat. We both had a shower and then Edd had a short nap to recover from all the exercise we'd done during the day - I was fortunate to have flippers, which enabled me to swim quite quickly without as much effort as him; he got a full body work out every time we went out, so needed to recover.
Cip had gone to Walking Street again to get some souvenirs and texted us that he was getting pizza for a late dinner - it was 9.30pm - would we like one as well? Edd was hungry again, I was peckish, so he ordered us a Hawaiian pizza to-go and 2 cool drinks. He came back half an hour later and we all sat on our balcony, eating our not-so-midnight snack.
I was exhausted from the day's activities and went to bed shortly afterwards, Edd was being savaged by mosquitos, so said goodnight to his friend and followed me inside. We'd had an eventful day underwater and needed a good nights sleep to recuperate, ready for another day of underwater adventures.
