dzasta travels
I walked from the train station lookin for the place I intended to stay and couldnt find it. I even had an old russian lady helping me but we couldnt find the place at all so I came back to second choice.
I have been out for a walk today and I am in an old part of town. There are a lot of wooden buildings, most in need of repair. There is one street where they have demolished all the old buildings and they are now rebuilding them new but in the old style.
I found the chinese market, just the usual ****. The exciting thing is there was an old guy cooking meat on a stick. Needless to say I have a new best friend. There are not a lot of street traders here cos it is so bloody cold. Here we are nearly summer and the max didnt get to double figures. I also fornd an old lady selling real Turkish bread. Wish I had found them together.
I dont like the shops here. They have double doors, to keep the cold out, and sometimes when you go in you are in a shopping center and sometimes in one shop. I know it says it on the front but I cant read the signs.
Not really much to see here, the soviets destroyed most of it in the 30s, so I will have a bit of a look around again tomorrow then go back to Listvyanka. Listvyanka is on the shores of Lake Baikal and I will prob chill there for a couple of days.
Might give you a bit more tomorrow.
I had the best sleep last night since I left home. (did i mention Ive got the flu) Woke up to a bright and sunny day. Most people seem to be moving in or out. The 3 girls who were in my dorm left this morn and a pommy guy has come in. I got ready to go out in shorts and T shirt and one of te girls here said I should put on long pants and jacket. I am in am appartment on the 3rd floor so I see the weather but cant feel it. I changed and when I walked outside I was glad I listened to her. Obout an hour later I was sorry I listened cos I was carrying my coat. A couple of hours later I was glad I listened. Etc etc. Apparently that is Good weather for here.
So I went walking to look at old wooden houses and churches. I gotta slow up on the Russian churches cos there are gonna be a few. I will be a little more selective in future. I did an epic walk right around town and saw most things. It is pretty interesting burt only for a day or two at the max.
On the way home I wanted a juice. Do you think I could find somewhere to buy one. I could buy beer everywere. They have Darwin Stubbies here, 1.5ltr at 11.5%alc for 84R. That is less than $3. Eventually I went into a bottlo and got juice and water.
The old Soviet buildings are either incredibly good or incredibly ugly. There is no middle of the road, just good or bad.
I went to the Chinese market for dinner....meat on a stick. I thought it was chicken when I saw it but it was not like any chicken I have had before, it was tasty though.I sta with a couple of taxi drivers and we had a little fun trying to comunicate. Im on a Mushrutka tomorrow to Lisvyanka and will be there for two or three days then to Krasnoyarsk.
