I'm at the local cafe and the internet here works great.
Yesterday when I arrived here I couldn't find the hotel I was looking for. I did find a couple of my second choices and after checking a few I chose Triomphe Hotel. It is not great but is OK and just near the corniche. Last night I stood out on my balcony and over the road is the place I was looking for. If they leave their s***ters open I can see in the rooms. Oh well?
This morning I went to the train station and bought a ticket back to Cairo. I always have to go to a couple of windows to get someone who can speak English, and understand me. It turned out easier than I thought. On the way back I spied a market and went for a look. I had to get some more thongs, I'm going through them. I bought the kids the ultimate must have prezzies. Then I walked along the Corniche (a walkway around the harbour) I was heading to the Biblioteca (library) but on the way I stopped at Selsela, an upmarket cafe right on the beach, and had morning tea.
There is nothing Egyptian here, it was built by Alexander the Great and after him Cleopatra, everything here is roman. I saw some roman ruins yesterday on the way in but I can't find them now. The original library was the biggest in the world, said to have over 700,000 books (scrolls) when there wasn't that many produced, must have had some doubles. That library got looted and burnt down. The new one is an ultra modern building supposed to look like a discus sticking out of the ground. I got all the way there and it is closed. The building is surrounded by temp fencing so I couldn't get a decent photo.
This arvo I had a nana nap and then went for a ride on the tram. They have had trams here since 1863 and still use them but they are very slow and rattly. They are slow cos the traffic stops on the tracks and they can't get through, they take their chances the same as the cars. It was still a bit of fun for a ride.
I'm here again tomorrow then train to Cairo the day after.
As you know there used to be a famous lighthouse here. The Pharos was built in 283bc and is considered one of the 7 wonders of the ancient world. Unfortunately in 1303 a massive earthquake toppled it and now there is a fort in its place. Fort Qaitbey was built by sultan Qaitbey in 1480, supposedly using some of the stone from the original lighthouse. My mission today was to walk there. It wasn't as far as I thought but there is not much to see between here and there. Still it filled in my morning.
I had a quiet arvo and now I have to pack to go back to Cairo in the morning. I don't have much to do there either but I will go to the museum again and get some photos and try to do a video.
