After the false start yesterday I was on the 3.30 mini bus today. I did my permit yesterday, you need a permit to travel that way. I got picked up on time and went down with 8 Japanese. They all slept all the way there so it was a quiet trip.
When we got there at about 7 the driver said be back here no later than 8.45? My intention was to stay overnight. So I went to look at the temples and see what happens.
The temple of Ramses II is about 200mtr from its original spot. When they built the high dam they would have inundated 28 temples and monuments so they pulled them apart and moved them to higher ground. These two are amazing. I wasn't allowed to take photos inside but I got close. Ramses II built his to show off to the neighbours no built the other one for his favourite queen Nefertari. They are some of the icon shots from Egypt and there should be a few more in a few days.
Anyway I was finished looking at them and the only accomodation I could find was very expensive so I came back to Aswan. There is nothing to do here but there is also nothing to do at Abu Simbel and it is cheaper to do nothing in Aswan. What I would have paid for accomodation in Abu Simbel will pay for accomodation and beer in Aswan.
Ba k in Aswan today I took the ferry to Elephantine island for something to do. The Nubian village there is reall just an old village. There are no cars cos the dirt streets are not wide enough. It is a laborinth is small alleys and the whole island stinks. On the ferry over to the island I saw the most tourists I have seen in the last 6 weeks. There was 3 bus loads of Chinese tourists getting in faluccas and going For a sail. Only problem was there is no wind and it is hot as hell. They were just sitting in the middle of the river waiting for any puff of wind.
I'm on a boat to Luxor tomorrow for 2 days so I might not have wifi till I get to Luxor.
