dzasta travels
The ferry ride over was OK, we were crashing into the waves for the first 15-20 min but after that it was pretty smooth. After customs in Belize we had to wait for 1/2hr so I got to meet a few people. A guy from Melb on his last week a couple of pommy lads going to Costa Rica for 5 weeks and a couple of German girls going to Panama for 3 months, like me, so I guess I will come across some of them again.
Caye Caulker is an island off the coast of Belize. It is pretty laid back and mostly people come here to chill or go diving. There are no cars on the island, only golf buggys. All the streets are dirt and all the restaurants have dirt floors. Last night I went out looking for dinner, there is only restaurants and they all charge the same high prices for unimaginative junk. A huge storm rolled in and it absolutely chucked down for a couple of hours. That is the first real rain I have had since I been here. Lucky I had a poncho with me.
The guest house I am in is very "rustic". Kinda like Point Perron in the 60s. Wooden building of about 5 rooms, on stilts, outside dunny, very basic.
I want to go to the Blue hole but it is way too expensive.( I will steel a photo and put it on here for you to see) Anyway there are a couple of dive boats going tomorrow but they charge for 3 dives and I don't dive. It is about 70km off the coast at Lighthouse reef and I just don't think it will look the same from a boat as the pics all taken from the air. Instead I prolly going to go snorkelling at shark and Ray alley at Hol Chan marine reserve.
Sorry this is an iPad so you will have to google it, I can't save a pic and put it on here.
It is stinking hot here today the sweat is poring off me and I have been swimming twice already and going again soon. The forecast is for heavy rain tonight and tomorrow?
The forecast was right! A massive storm went over at about 4 this morning. I have only see rain that heavy once before. It is now 8 and the weather is looking good, the sun is out and it is hot but they have cancelled my tour for today. They say no one will be going out today. The forecast is for storms all day and everyday for the next 2 weeks. All the rain has bought out the mozzies, I have to be careful cos they carry all sorts of diseases here. When I leave tomorrow I think I am going try to go all the way to San Ignatio to try to beat some of this weather. On the upside I found a ripper place for breakfast. Ice and Beans, they do great iced coffee and I had pineapple bagel and waffle and cream. The diet is going beautifully.
Yesterday Nina from the guesthouse said there was a big storm coming. It seemed strange cos there is no wind and it is hot as hell. This morning at about 4am there was a massive thunder storm and heaps of rain but it passed in about 1/2hr. I went down town to check on my tour to Hol-chan and they said it is cancelled and no one was going out today cos there is storm coming. On the way back I stopped at the pub, just for research, and the barmaid said she expected heaps of rain but not much wind. There is a red flag up and they have started evacuations for anyone who wants to leave. In the couple of hours, errrr short time, I sat there there was a procession of people leaving for the mainland. The evacuations are voluntary today but tomorrow there may not be a choice. The locals are now putting up shutters and the guest house has issued us with battery lights. It is starting to get real.
3 young guys arrived at the guest house and we got talking and they said they wanted to go snorkelling. I said so did I but there are no boats going out today. So we decided to go down town and see if we could find someone to take us. The first couple of places refused then a dodgy guy named Anwar said he would take us for $30. Sweet, what could go wrong? We went to South passage. Shark and stingray alley and coral garden. A-MAZING. I dont have an under water camera so you will have to believe me. The Sharks were only nurse sharks but the Rays were creeping me out. When they swam under me I just kept thinking about Steve Irwin and kept pushing them away. It was a really great arvo.
So this morning there is a little bit of wind around and I am on the first ferry to Belize City. From there I will take the bus to San Ignatio and stay there for the night.
I just ran into the 3 guys I met here in Belize City and they were evacuated from Caye Caulker. They were woken up this morning and told to leave and the island has been evacuated of all tourists.
The plan for tomorrow is ferry outa here to Belize city then bus to Belmopan then bus to San Ignatio. Let's see how I go.
