Last day in Suva today, and very ready to move on. I'm picking up my passport and Indonesian visa tomorrow, and then I travel to some smaller islands, and FINALLY get som sea and sun! Can't wait! I have been a good girl and applied my sunscreen, so no tan whatsoever. Must do something about that.
Was a bit lonely today, but it passed. Had some retail therapy, and also realized how much more at home I am here and how I manouvre through the town and it's people more easily. I can just imagine how I must have looked so lost when I first got here. It doesn't matter that everybody is friendly, doesn't matter that the British left a lot of their cultural influence - it is on the other side of the world, man.
I am continuosly surprised about how few people there are here. On the streets and in the shops, everywhere I go, I am almost by myself. They also have 5-10 people working in every shop. Jesus, Mary and Joseph! One of them will greet you, and make some small talk about where you are from, how long you will stay, do you like Fiji and so on. Then they FOLLOW you around ALL through the shop. Doesn't matter if you go into another deparment, to another floor. If you touch something, stop to look, they immidiately tell you the prize, what special discount 'just for you' you can have, what size would you like. It makes me nervous. On the street if you stop to look around, you imediately have someone show you the way - if it was the way you wanted to go or not doesn't matter - then when you say goodbye they want to sell you some junk.
It becomes difficult to know who want to help you and who want to sell you stuff. Yesterday I wanted to go to a rainforest park, if you go by yourself you must hire a guard to go with you. I have enough following around in the shops thank you very much, so I didn't go. It was Sunday so not much else to do, so I decided to have lunch at the Raintree Lodge. I could take a taxi, but I love the buses here, and the scenery is amazing. I asked some women where my bus was leaving from, and they showed me. As I was walking over ther, I heard a man wisteling behind me, wanting to talk to me. I thouht I was going to be a bit 'street smart' and ignore him, but he kept following me. It turned out he was going the same way, could he please help me find my bus and the right stop? We had a good talk about different things, and I learned he was going back to his village to say hello to his parents. He did this every Sunday - even though it takes two hours with bus each way. 'Street stupid' more like it.
Today none of this bothered me at all. I managed to figure out who was who, and the ladies in the shop didn't bother me, I found the right shop with things I actually wanted to buy, and the lady was actually really helpful.
Yesterday I also had a herbal footmassage for 75 NOK, fabulous da'ling! Perfect for my blistered feet. Enough of the high life, I'm off to the bush now, a nice resort in the bush at least.
