Arrived in late at 9am which was a bit annoying as I had no phone and had arranged to meet Kat! There was a nice lady in the Greyhound office though so she let me use her phone so I could call and rearrange! Rebuts my figured out the tram systems and got on one to St Kilda where Kat was staying! She met me at the tram stop which was really nice and we went back to her hostel (Base) to dump my bags in her room and get ready for our road trip to see the Great Ocean Road!
We were planning on leaving fairly early to try and see as much as possible. Kat had found another guy, David from Holland, and 2 danish guys who wanted to go too, so we were all planning on hiring a car. It all got a bit confusing though because the Danish were getting a van anyway so were going to see if we fit in it and then give us a call - if we didn't all fit the 3 of us would just hire our own car. This arrangement didn't seem too bad, meant I had time for a shower etc which was nice!
Spent the morning trying to figure out my phone... Had some very unhelpful people on the phone from Alice Springs saying my only option was to pay $240 to get it sent to me! Was very unimpressed. Totally out of touch with the world too as I had no replacement phone! Managed to get chargers for two of the ones I'd borrowed which was awesome but still couldn't get my uk sim card working in any of them. Was also having a slight mare figuring out how to get to Sydney as I had left it too late for flights!
By 12.30...about 2 hours after we had originally planned to leave...we still had no word from the Danish guys. We only had one number for them and it wasn't going through...eventually we decided it was time to look into hiring a car ourselves. After a quick talk with the booking guy in the hostel, it transpired that the company they worked for had no cars left for that day and "if you aren't booking with them I can't help you" - completely useless!
So we went on the Internet and got a list of car hire places to work through. We were having no luck and after the first 6 or so I had pretty much given up on getting to do the great ocean road. On the second last phone number though, we managed to get what appeared to be the last car in Melbourne! After a bit of organisation we finally had the car booked for a pickup at 2! Very exciting!
We got ourselves sorted and then walked round to pick up the car. It was really cute, and we managed to get a sat nav (thank god!) and iPod wire despite them insisting they didn't have either for about 10 minutes. We stopped at a shop to try and get my phone sorted which ended up being pretty unsuccessful. Then we hit the road! It was so much fun to be driving again! Loved it. We were on the motorway for quite a long time, a quick detour past a tiny airport by mistake haha, and stopped for a very healthy lunch at Hungry Jacks (Burger king) in the first big town. Then we drove on to a place called Newquay where we finally saw the ocean!! It was really pretty, and we chilled and watched the surfers for a while, then headed on with Kat at the wheel!
We passed through a few more small towns and past some really nice beaches, and were finally on the Great Ocean Road, which was absolutely amazing! Driving along the coast past some amazing scenery! We had a few more beach stops, then stopped at a small town to find somewhere to stay for the night.
We found a cute wee backpackers were we had our own room with a kitcheny bit and a balcony which was really nice! Once we had settled in we headed into the town to get some lunch for the next day, a few ciders and fish and chips for dinner!
We had our dinner out on the balcony and chilled out and chatted for a bit which was really nice and then headed to bed. Had a really awesome day in the end!
