Tuesday - Musee d'Orsay
Went to the Musee d'Orsay today which is on the left bank of the Seine River opposite Tuileries Garden and the Louvre. The building is the old Gare D'Orsey (train station) built from 1898-1900 for the Paris exhibitions.
The museum was absolutely lovely with a great range of stone carvings, bronze castings & masters paintings by Gauguin, Van Gogh, Monet, Renoir, Picasso to name a few plus beautiful ceramics, vases, crockery and furniture pieces. The paintings were of all dimensions from book size to the size of a semi trailer and were of all different styles from traditional through to impressionist.
The galleries were set out all through the building on different levels on both sides with open gallery space right through the middle of the building clear to the roof which is very high.
Unfortunately, we were only permitted to take photos in a couple of areas not including the works of art. Interesting as this is not the case at the Louvre.
The building was absolutely full to bursting with people, mainly tourists all engrossed in the treasures on display. We could not believe it was so busy but summer time in Paris is that way so we have to get used to it. We stayed around 3 hours and checked out the queues on the way out & there many more waiting to go in than when we arrived about 9:30.
Lunch called so off to the bakery to buy the traditional baguette then through the busy Paris streets to our apartment.
