On our previous visit to Rome we missed the Sistine Chapel due to the 3 hour wait to enter so this time we skipped the queues by booking online. We felt sorry for the tourists in the line which stretched around a kilometre as we entered via the expess lane but once inside we were caught up in the press of almost shoulder to shoulder slowly moving visitors shuffling along the corridors on our way to the Sistine Chapel. The artwork & frescos in the corridors are just beautiful. We would have liked to spend more time in the long corridors enjoying them but we had to keep moving. We eventually arrived at the Sistine Chapel & the frescos painted by Michaelangelo are just breathtaking. Certainly a must see when in Rome. Unfortunately photos are not permitted in the chapel. Today the chapel is the site of the Papal conclave, the process by which a new Pope is selected. After the visit to the chapel we escaped to the lovely museum gardens for a welcome break from the crush of people. Continuing on we headed to the museum which was thankfully much less crowded and well worth the visit to see the collections of beautiful sculptures, tapestries, paintings, Egyptian artifacts & various objects of art collected over the centuries by numerous popes. When we left the museum we decided to check out the queue in St Peter's square for entry to St Peter's Basilica & found it wasn't long & only took 10 minutes to enter. Although we had visited St Peter's before, it still amazes you when you enter & take in the size and beauty of the interior. The entire interior of St Peter's is lavishly decorated with marble, reliefs, architectural sculpture and gilding.
