This morning we departed Mt Emei for a two hour journey to Chengdu.
Our first stop in Chengdu was the Wuhou Shrine and museum. It was first built in memory of Zhuge Liang (181 - 234), the prime minister of Shu ( 221 - 263 ) of the Three Kingdoms ( 220 - 280). Zhuge Liang was a famous statesman, military strategist. He was also given the title of Marquis Wuxiang in his lifetime. "Wuhou" literally means "Wuxiang Marquis". This is the largest museum in China displaying the relics and introducing the history about the Three Kingdom.
Wuhou Shrine has incorporated the Liu Bei's Tomb and Liu Bei Temple into one huge museum. In addition, Wuhou Shrine also includes the Sanyi Temple and 50 statues of the heros in Shu Kingdom.
Liu Bei founded the Shu Kingdom ( 221 - 263 ) and ascended the throne. He died of illness in Fengjie Chongqing.
Walking around the area we saw the Tang and Ming Tablets the beautiful giant bamboo walkways and the magnificent gardens. Then we visited Jinli Old Street and this street was built originally as early as Shu Kingdom and is called the First Street of the Shu Kingdom. This street was narrow and had some charm about it. There were numerous souvenir shops and cafes.
Back to our hotel the Xin Liang Hotel. We had dinner in a local restaurant where the locals smoked and spat at the tables. Food was good but the manners of the Chinese were terrible. After dinner we visited the theatre for the Changing Faces Show. The Face Changing show is a sub genre of the Sichuan Opera. It is said that ancient people painted their faces in order to scare off wild animals. This dramatic skill is incorporated into the performance and is accompanied by fast rhythmic music, lots of drums. The show was very different and the changing faces was excellent.
