3am saw us rise & join the bus queue about 30 from the front. Some people were walking up, but it was still dark & no-one actually knew the way, so we thought we'd stick with the bus. At 5am I joined the other queue to get us tickets to actually get on the bus!! & then re-joined Rach in the original queue & got on the 3rd bus at 5:30am up to the site. During our queue to get through the gates at the site, I got us stamps to do the 7am tour up Wanay Picchu (the steep hill next to the ruins), however when we got inside & spoke to a few people whilst waiting for the sunrise, they informed us it was stupidly steep with sheer drops & only ropes to hold onto. As a result we thought we'd give it a miss!! We watched the sunrise over the hills & shine down onto the Machu Picchu ruins before starting to explore. How Rach convinced me to go round to the 'Inca bridge to nowhere', I've got no idea, as it was along a VERY slim path along the side of the mountain with a sheer drop next to us. Even people who weren't scared of heights told me they were nervous. So today, we both must have our fearless hats on as Rach went further round than most other people had the bottle to go! After that we went to the main site & decided to buy ourselves our own private tour guide. We'd literally just started when we bumped into Cal, Dean & Hayley, who joined us for the fascinating tour around the town. They again used tiers here to grow crops, but also had multiple buildings, homes & temples showing off their masonry skills. Royalty sometimes lived here, (including the kings harem of wives!) & parties & religious festivals occurred catering for & accommodating over 1000 Incans at a time. The 2 hour tour was excellent & when it finished we ending up bumping into the boys (Harry, Ross & Craig) who had just finished their 4 Day Inca Trail & looked dead on their feet. (This was the last time we'd see them before we get home). The rest of us decided to chill & have a picnic on one of the terraces, while Ross & Harry continued exploring. Afterwards everyone left us, so we had another hour or so wandering around before we got our passports stamped(!) & headed back down. After a couple of hours kip, we headed out for food, where they tried stinging us for 20% tax! The whole town rips people/tourists off with it's prices, etc. So we argued the tax & then trotted off back for more sleep!
