Up & about early to catch our bus to Ollantaytambo. Arrived for a quick bite before making our way up the multiple tiers of the Inca ruins. The tiers here were massively steep (as always!) and were used for growing crops, using their advanced irrigation system of multiple layers of different materials within each tier. Here we also saw more examples of how remarkably intelligent the Incas were in their stonework skills, making the stones smooth to touch & shaped to fit together so perfectly that mortar wasn't required to keep the walls up for 100s of years. There was also an example of an Incan house here. These were excellent ruins & well worth the visit. I then nipped up the hill on the other side of town to see another small ruin while Rach ordered lunch for us, which we ate in the cafe in the small town square. A quick stroll down to the station, a tea & a bit of hassle about our tickets later & we were on the PeruRail Vistadome train to Aquas Calientes (Machu Picchu). 4 hours of multiple panoramic views through the many windows (even in the ceiling!) of our train later & we arrived to find our hostel (Supertramp) double booked. However they put us up in a nice hotel for the same price, so we didn't complain & just went & bought our entry tickets for the ruins. We nipped out for some overpriced, below average food & then Rach headed back (not feeling 100%), while I went to buy some bits for lunch tomorrow & made us some sarnies. We then got our heads down at about 8/9pm-ish.
