We stayed at Canakkle a very pretty seaside town so had to cross the Dardanelles on the ferry to drive to the Gallipoli Peninsula. We visited all the places that have familiar names from our Anzac history. Anzac Cove, Shrapnel Valley, Shell Green, The Nek and Lone Pine. Even though the beach at Anzac Cove and landscape of the hills have changed in the past hundred years it is still possible to see the daunting task the Anzacs faced in 1915. Seeing rows and rows of gravestones at each of the cemeteries with the names of the young soldiers, fathers, sons, brothers made us all feel sad yet very privileged to be able to visit and pay our respects. One of the women on our tour laid flowers at the grave of a relative at Shell Green and we all recited the Ode it was very moving and a few tears were shed. The next morning most of the group took part in a dawn service and wreath laying organised by our guide with a couple of people speaking and the Last post being played. It was good to have a free afternoon in Canakkle to look around and relax as the past two days had been so busy.
