The rest of tuesday afternoon was spent working on our projects. As the course of the visit went on more information about what were being expected to deliver in our projects leaked out. At the start we had thought that it could be either a song, or a poem, or a drama along with a display board and perhaps a talk. We started to realise that each group were expected to produce all four elements. This meant that Dan and I needed to spend time with one or two of the groups who were maybe not so gifted in producing one or other of the elements. My group were doing OK but somehow a negotiation with Brian ended up with me agreeing to deliver the rap that I had written for our group. We were teaching them the chorus some singing and some playing the recorder and we had a tabla rhythm going underneath - Brian was going to play chords as background and beatbox during the verses. Whilst we had been shopping in the morning our group had done some work on the displayboard and written and learnt the poem so Brian spent the afternoon working on our drama whilst I helped some of the other groups.
After the end of lessons the lovely singing teacher came in and taught us a third song, this one is a was a traditional folk song called Phaguner Monahaye . I found this one much harder to get my tongue around the words and this time we didn’t have a copy of the music so we had to learn it by repetition which was even harder. She was very patient with us and Dan began to realise that it had real similarities with folk music from the UK. It has a very lively tune and we really enjoyed learning it.
During the previous week Anup had been mentioning his hope to have a website specifically devoted to the school that is separate from the Mathieson Music Trust - this will point both potential new students and supporters of the school to the best ways they can get involved. One of our students, George, sat with Anup for most of the evening and developed the new website - he sorted out the purchase of the domain name and hosting the website and got a basic site up and running with Anup sat with him giving him directions about how he hoped it might look. The other thing Anup was doing was over seeing the cooking of our evening meal - he had provided the cook with instructions for making chicken burgers which were being cooked on a newly acquired George Foreman grill, unfortunately this meant they were taking an awfully long time to cook so we didn’t eat until turned 10pm. This wouldn’t have been a problem except that we were gearing up for a really really early start the next morning so had intended to get an early night.
