After being treated to "Ripley's Believe It or Not!" last night, I thought my trip could not get better.........
Anyone who doesn't know me, that was well veiled sarcasm......... Think that may have been too.
Angel Island was our first port of call today. It was a stop we didn't want to make but leaving booking Alcatraz to the last minute, it was our only option of making the journey.
I hadn't been there, never heard about it. Angel Island had a variety of uses. From the Coast Miwok Indians using it as a fishing and hunting site 2000 years ago, to the now, a California State Park. In between, during the Civil War it was used as a garrison for the infantry and to protect San Francisco. It was also used during both world wars for soldiers, then for processing POW's. It ended up as a Quarantine station. During all of this I had a walking countdown going, only an hour 45 minutes till Alcatraz............
I have never seen the youngen take so much interest in something non-amusement based. He had the audio tour going and was truely into the whole experience of Alcatraz, which was very interesting, to the point his camera ran out of battery, it's ok thought there was a gift shop at the end of the tour so we bought the book.
It was fascinating to see the fog move in so quickly to engulf the Golden Gate Bridge. The day started so warm and clear, and by lunch you couldn't see the bridge.
We drove Lombard Street after the youngen did some washing, a remarkable feat considering he was asleep the entire time. Lombard is the windiest street in the world, 2 car lengths and you turn, 2 car lengths and you turn, basically down a cliff face.... We then drove over the Golden Gate Bridge, town side foggy, other side clear as....
Leave for LA tomorrow, another six hour drive.......
