We arrived in Foz do Iguaçu at around midday but unfortunately had forgotten to make a note of the name and address of the hostel we had booked, which resulted in us having to walk around town with our backpacks to find an ATM and then an internet cafe - not a great start! When we finally reached the hostel we were so exhausted that we fell asleep for a couple of hours. We spent the rest of the day relaxing and exploring some of the town before ahvnig an early night for a busy day on Monday.
After a fantastic breakfast we took the bus from Foz over the border to Paraguay to have a look around and get the passport stamp. The border city in Paraguay, Ciudad Del Este, is essentially a massive shopping centre where Brazilians and Argentinians go to buy cheap items to bring back into the country. It was really interesting to walk around and see so many stalls littering the roads with both genuine and counterfeit items and take in all of the madness that was Paraguay! The 20 minute trip was well worth it for the views from the border bridge over the River seperatng the two countries, one way looking up the wide green river to a beautiful island sat in the middle and the otehr looking down to the river border with Argentina. In the evening we went to a traditional Churrascuria Rodizio - an all you can eat buffet where you help yourself to salad and pastas while they bring a selection of different cuts of beef to the table on spits for you to choose from. It was delicious!
On Tuesday morning we visited the Brazilian side of Iguaçu Falls where we got amazing panoramic views of all of the falls from several pathways. While the Argentinian side had allowed us to look down on the waterfalls the Brazilian side of the park gave wide views from distance on all but the last path that was situated almost directly under one of the largest falls. The view was incredible standing under one waterfall and above another and being surrounded by falls on all sides, of course getting completely soaked the whole time! We then took an elevator up to a higer point where we could look over the canyon leading upto the Devils Throat waterfall where we took some brilliant pictures. After the falls we caught our 23 hour bus to Rio where we could finally enjoy some beaches again!
