Our first day in Puerto Iguazú was relatively relaxed as it was chucking it down with rain when we arrived. We made the most of a weather break to walk across town to a viewpoint (Hito Argentina) with a post coloured like the Argentinian flag at the edge of the Rio Iguazu from which you can see both Brazil and Paraguay and their own colourful viewpoints just across the river. After our walk was cut short by more rain we spent the rest of the day in the hostel watching tv and talking to people.
The second day was the big day as we went to the Iguazu Falls National Park just outside of town which turnedout to be the most impressive natural feature that we have seen so far and one that will take some beating. While there we explored lots of the park, walking through the jungle trails and seeing numerous animals (including monkeys!) as well as the many waterfalls which were all amazing. We walked along 3 different circuits that all gave different views of the falls with one including a short boat trip over the river to an island where a panoramic view of most of the falls can be seen. All of the falls were impressive as was the amount of them but the biggest one, the Gargantua del Diablo (Devil´s Throat) was just breathtaking. The sheer amount of water tumbling down (up to 12,000 cubic metres per second in the wet season) was like nothing either of us have ever seen and has to be seen in person to be believed. We stood over the waterfall on a walkway getting soaked from the spray rising from the bottom of the fall and got some brilliant pictures. We also took the parks small ´eco train´ to reach some of the falls which was great fun. In the evening we went for an Argentinian dinner with Cailin & Rob where we were served a selection of Barbequed meats that included steak, chicken, chorizo, blood sausage, kidney and both large and small intestines! Only Tim was brave enough to try the intestines (they weren´t great!) but everyone enjoyed the meal. Ashley & Cailin had another bottle of wine back at the hostel and then decided to go out to a club in which they lasted a whole 30 minutes before having to come back.
The next day was spent relaxing or in the girls case recovering and exploring the town some more. At the time of writing (9.55pm the following day) neither of them had recovered which brought much amusement to Tim & Rob! Tomorrows plan is to head into Brazil in search of beaches.
