We arrived in Colonia at 9pm after the late ferry and walked through town to our hostel before managing to find a restaurant open at 10.30pm on a Sunday! On Monday we walked around and discovered just how small Colonia is, covering the whole town in about an hour. It was old and attractive with a crumbling old lighthouse, old buildings and defenses from a war hundreds of years ago as well as a more modern side with a small working harbour and an industry heavily reliant on tourism. As the weather was poor we were forced inside the hostel for the afternoon where luckily there was a classic Arnie film on TV.
Having done all there appeared to do and already fed up with the miserable weather we decided to head north with our Irish friends from Buenos Aires Cailin & Rob. The intention was to bus upto Fray Bentos (yes the home of the Fray Bentos meat!) for a short tour of the factory before bussing to Iguazu Falls via the border town of Salto in Uruguay. As it turned out we had no time to stop in Fray Bentos and arrived late in Salto so had to spend a night there before bussing up to Iguazu. We went out for dinner with Cailin & Rob who are planning to do much the same route as us through South America.
