Today is my father's birthday and he is a legend, however, we started early again.
So, we went to Green Island to snorkel today. The island is actually a coral cay - which means it is made out of coral. We started the tour with a 45 minutes boat road to the island. After a quick hot drink we had a tour of the reef on a glass bottom boat. The guide told us about the different corals that we can see and the different fishes we will probably see later when we snorkel. He also explained the ecosystem of the reef. How it reproduces and how it survives.
We then got our equipment and got into snorkelling. At first you see a lot of algae butafter a short while you soon find the reef. Our highlight was finding 2 turtles. At first we saw the little one which we believe to be the female and the male showed up, and he was big. They were both majestic, such beautiful swimmers and absolutely gorgeous to watch. We spent a bit of time with them, until they had enough and decided to go on their own.
We stopped for lunch and had a quick look at the island crocodiles. A bizarre little place which a family proudly owns and run and they have the largest crocodile in captivity - World Guinness Record, his name is Cassius and he is 110+ year old. They have approximately a dozen crocodiles and some odd other reptiles like an alligator and turtles.
We finally went back into the water to get back into some more snorkelling. We got to see the turtles again. The smaller one was swimming around and the bigger one found himself a rock to sort of hide under. It was awesome.
We returned back on the boat to Cairns. And after a short trip to the Caravan Park, we finally got to celebrate Dad's birthday with cupcake, presents and cards. A little surprise he didn't quite expect.
