Didier Moutia's Travels
It was an early start this morning as we started our long drive from Alice Springs to Tenant Creek. We drove over 500kms today but had lots of awesome stops along the way.
First stop was the ANZAC Memorial Hill. There were some great views of Alice Springs. It is such a small place!
As we left town we entered the no speed limit zone. Dad was a bit sad, here we are in a huge and heavy campervan and all dad can do is drive at 110 kms/hr. He would rather be driving a Lamborghini today!
Soon we came across the official marker for the Tropic of Capricorn. The Tropic of Capricorn is located at Latitude 23 -442028 and Longitude 133 – 833111. I did not understand what all the fuss was about but Dad told me what it all meant. Still not sure what it all means!
The first major stop was at a roadhouse called Aileron. This place was crazy. So many funny signs and the guy behind the counter was hilarious. Behind and next to the roadhouse there are huge statues of aboriginals. We found out the statues represent the local Anmatjere aboriginal tribe. We also saw some statues of lizards … one of the lizards even had a bra … yes you heard right!
While we were in the gift shop Dad walked up to the large male statue at Aileron. On the way a very large Red Kangaroo approached him. Although there was a fence between Dad and the kangaroo, he knew the Kangaroo could easily jump it. Red kangaroos can be aggressive. The kangaroo stopped 10 metres away from him, when he noticed that a pig also came running up towards him. Soon dad realised the kangaroo and pig were friendly and he went to get us to come and see them. They were super friendly to us.
Next stop was Barrow Creek Hotel. This place was crazy. My dad and mum had a laugh with the owner … something about Wolf Creek. I have no idea what they were on about. The walls were covered with cards, photos and also money. In the early days workers would write their names on money notes and post them to the wall so they had money for a drink when they returned. So dad did the same thing! Such a cool place and the people were awesome. Next door was one of the original telegraph stations. At the front of the station is the grave of one of the early workers at the station who was killed when the natives once attacked the station.
We saw a lot of road trains today. At one point we had to pull over and let a wide load go through. The truck driver gave us several blasts of his air horn when he saw us on the side of the road.
Next stop Wycliffe Well roadhouse. Wycliffe Well was also a very different roadhouse. Dad said the area has the most UFO sightings in Australia. The roadhouse is covered with alien pictures, articles, dolls etc. We even got a free alien plush doll for buying more than $50 worth of stuff. We loved this place and spent quite a bit of time here.
Not long to Tennant Creek now and we come across the Devils Marbles. It is crazy hot and I am glad it only took 30 minutes to walk around them. They are unusual and beautiful.
Of course our day is not complete without taking a swim. We were lucky to have some nice warm water at our new campground! Tomorrow is also another big day of travelling so early to bed!
