Monday 13th April
St. John's, Antigua
After a windy day at sea we have come to our second Caribbean island, Antigua. The wind has dropped today and it was already pretty hot when we arrived this morning. Some of the ship have gone to see the cricket as England are playing the West Indies in a test match here on Antigua. We decided to just stroll round town. The Main Street was full of people offering trips to different parts of the island but as Russ is suffering with his back today we thought a trip in a minibus or cars wasn't wise. We walked to the cathedral but found that it was in the middle of a big restoration and was a building site. We were able to look in the door but couldn't really see anything of the church interior because of all the building work going on. We had a wander around the streets - you had to be careful as there we a lot of large holes in the pavements which should have been covered by a grill but many were missing. After lunch back on the ship we took a different route and followed the wooden board walk that took us to Redcliffe Quay we passed bars and some small kiosk shops that were lovely. We walked on until we came to a park called Victoria Park. This park was on the edge of the town and was very quiet. We saw lots of little lizard here that very quickly darted away when you moved. There was also a really large tree that had a raised decking all around it which looked perfect for people to sit in the shade. However when I walked on it it didn't feel too safe and was quite high off the ground. Some of the wood looked rotten and it creaked a lot so I soon got off of it! We walked back through town and went again to Redcliffe Quay - definitely our favourite part of the town and stopped at the bar in the photo to sample the traditional Caribbean drink - rum punch. We had our drink on the terrace where there was a cool breeze and views of the water.
