We flew into Bangkok on Sunday evening. It was very humid and warm coming off the plane and a 45 min drive by taxi to our apartment in Ekkamai. After the etiquette of Japan's drivers we were thrust into the centre of Bangkok's traffic chaos, bikes and cars coming at you from all directions this was definitely Bangkok! After a good night's sleep we headed out to see what Bangkok has to offer.
Our apartment is a short distance from the centre of the city, but has a free tuc tuc to the local BTS sky train station. We have spent the last few days visiting Jim Thompson's House, Wat Urun (the temple of Dawn), Wat Pho (a giant reclining Budda), China Town and Khao San Road.
We thought the Temple of Dawn was very beautiful, unfortunately the main temple was covered in scaffold which was a shame.
At the beginning of the week it was very thundery, but today has been very hot and sunny reaching the low 30's. Yesterday we had to shelter from a heavy downpour but otherwise we have been lucky again with the weather whilst enjoying the lovely temples and interesting sights and smells of Bangkok. Walking through China Town was fun and we called into a store to enjoy the cool aircon and found it full of toys, games and models, so Chris spent a happy hour exploring!
The best deal so far has been the river boat that travels up and down the main Chao Phraya River calling at different piers, for 14 thai baht (32p) you can travel all the way up or down the river. Some of the long boats that take tourists for boat trips charge 700 thai baht (per person) for the same trip! Today we took the skytrain to the edge of China Town and through to Khao San Road, back down the river and home on the skytrain and finally tuc tuc to our apartment - we were exhausted and needed a lie down when we got back.
