Adventures of a Global Wanderer
Commuting in Toronto and suburbs just got easier with the new Presto prepaid fare system. Just like a phone card you buy or top up your card with a balance. The fares are then deducted every time you ride so need to pay by cash and have exact change. Some of the regional transit authorities outside Toronto have discounted fares when you have a Go Ticket from Toronto. In Brampton it is .65 cents compared to a regular bus fare of $3.25. The card will deduct $2.60 initially as it doesnt know your intended route. However, after boarding a Go Train/Bus it will adjust back to .65 cents after you have completed your Go Train/Bus journey. Also you can have an 'unlocked' card good for the entire network, unlike previously with Go Passes which were only good for a single line. This allows me to travel from either Brampton or Mississauga to downtown. While this is a great new cashless system you wonder why it took so long to introduce? London has had the Oyster Card and Hong Kong the Octopus for almost a decade now. Many other cities also have top up card systems which let you ride into the suburbs and use connecting networks. Also with no new infrastructure for years you're not going to get anywhere anytime faster. Toronto has one of the least developed subway networks for any major city. City council seems more interested in publishing a new study and killing the last one rather than building any actual new lines since the end of the 1980s. Even Daegu, Korea's third largest city and a population smaller than the Toronto GTA is nearing completion of Line 3 with a proposed Line 4 scheduled to start work next
