Adventures of a Global Wanderer
While I was away in in Korea during 2013 the basement flooded at the start of the year. I had setup the basement as my apartment with all my stuff when I went overseas in 2010. When we called the insurance company they caused a mess far worse than the flood.
I have two sets of bookcases and two end unit shelves. There is also a wall unit with my stereo system, dvds, and other display souvenir items. The insurance company hastily packed everything into boxes, not labelling which shelf or from which unit the items came, and shoving in things from different shelves into the same box.
Then when they were done recarpeting and repainting they took items from any box, stuck them on any shelf and emptied all the boxes out. So basically they have scrambled the entire contents of the room.
One of the reasons I wanted to come back from Korea was because I knew this was going to be a big job and only I could do it properly coz this was my own stuff. However, I noticed more damage they did to items as well.
I have a small tv cabinet on wheels. Because the carpeting is so deep they pulled so hard to move the unit they broke off two of the wheels from the underside. Also I had many of my travel photos in frames nicely stacked in a box. They were shoving around all the boxes the frames all fell over and the gl*********ed in some of them from the weight of the frames
The wall unit and bookcases were in the wrong positions and I had to empty them out anyway to re-sort everything that had just been dumped randomly on any shelf. Then I noticed the hinges hadn't been attached back on the wall unit so good job I was taking it apart as it could have collapsed.
Having taken the wall unit apart I noticed the speaker system, dvd, and stereo was all wired wrong so I had to fix that.
It took me two whole weeks to get the basement reorganized while trying to settle back in and spend time with my family and nephew. I think I only left the house maybe three times during that time.
There was no room to open my suitcase which had to sit near the doorway until the basement was all sorted out. Also I had five boxes shipped from Korea and there was no room to open those until everything was sorted.
I did consider writing a bit complaint letter to the insurance company and for the damage to the glass frames and tv unit but decided it wasn't worth it. I've worked for insurance companies and we're always told how a claim is supposed to be a great customer service experience
Because I had to go thru every item individually I did end up throwing out almost a room worths of stuff doing a cleanout.
