Adventures of a Global Wanderer
This morning I was leaving Riga Latvia and moving onto Vilnius Lithuania. As my hotel was next to the bus terminal I had lots of time to kill so explored the Central Market.
The district has curved warehouses which seem to be separate buildings but are in fact all connected. There are different sections for meats, cheeses, cakes, breads etc. The prices were so cheap under a dollar I shouldnt have gone to the supermarket yesterday to stock up.
Outside I had lots of time to kill so watched the trams turning and the morning reflection on the waters. There were still odd looking characters with bruised up faces so was trying to keep to myself.
My bus from Tallin to Riga was a luxury bus with tvs, snacks, and headphones. The bus to Vilnius was with the same company but this time only 3 Euros ($4). However, this was not a luxury coach and just a normal bus. It was sold out and completely full. Luckily I had the corner seat which had the only empty seat left next to me. Looks like people cant wait to get out of Latvia yet the bus into Latvia from Tallin was almost empty!
To make matters worse for the cramped duration there was no wifi even though it says to report it to the driver. I was squashed in the corner and was hoping someone else would say something. Again we drove right thru the border post.
Entering into Lithuania I didnt know what to expect. Latvia was a big drop in standards from Estonia. Lithuania was the furthest south and sandwiched between Poland and Belarus so I always expected this to be poorest of the three.
As we drove into Vilnius I was surprised to see how modern and developed it was, nothing like my scary drive into Riga.
I dont understand how Latvia went off the rails so badly yet Lithuania can have such high standards despite its geography and neighbours. My hotel was right by the bus station so easy to find but hard to get in as there is no reception or anyone to buzz.
Luckily someone was waiting to let me in. I had a massive furnished private apartment with kitchen for only $50. Luxury at last for the next two nites! My final hotels had some amazing treats coming up.
