Adventures of a Global Wanderer
Arriving at the airport I routinely weight my bag as some airlines or staffers are getting tougher on hand luggage. My bag was only 7.5kg while the allowance was 10kg.
After passing thru security there was a booth for CIBC bank getting Canadians to enroll for their air miles card. At first I tried to say no thanks and walk away.
Just before this trip when I called my bank to give them a travel notification they persuaded me to upgrade my card and get 25,000 bonus star alliance miles. That would give me a free trip to Vancouver. So I wasnt initially interested in the CIBC card thinking it was the same promo.
But they said they were giving 15,000 free miles just for signing up, no obligation, no annual fees on their own air miles plan, not star alliance. 15,000 would give me a free flight to New York or Montreal.
Since there was no annual fee and 15,000 miles just for activating the card I decided to take it since I was planning a trip to New York anyway so I get the flights paid for. This in addition to the 25,000 bonus star alliance miles plus the miles I was earning on this flight!
The plane was a new modern design. There was no shade to pull down. Instead it was an electronic one you lighten or darken by a keypad. I watched Mad Max then tried to sleep for the rest of the flight.
On arrival I switched to my UK passport easier for travel in the EU. They now have chip activated passport lines so I just tapped my passport and went thru rather than standing in line at the passport counter.
I bought a day pass for the S-Bahn for 12 Eu ($18). Since the airport is outside the city it costs more then a day city pass for only 6.20 Eu ($9).
Because of Oktoberfest all hotels had doubled their prices. I found one reasonably priced in comparison in a smaller town just outside the city, but part of the S-Bahn line. I had to change trains but the trains on that line only ran every 20 mins.
The hotel was easy to find from the station. I had already used google street view to find it before. It was nice with a kitchenette and bunk bed even though I was staying by myself.
