Adventures of a Global Wanderer
This morning I was leaving Finland and taking the ferry across to Tallinn Estonia. This was a route I had always wanted to do along with the train from St Petersburg to Helsinki and the two routes I had planned this trip around.
I had booked the first ferry at 7.40 so that I could reach Tallinn in time for the free morning walking tours. The streets were deserted and I was trying to find an atm to withdraw Euros before I went to Estonia.
I didnt see any atms on the way nor was there one in the passenger terminal. When people started standing in line early so did I. I was only 4th in the line which grew longer. However when they opened the counter people just started going to the front even though there was a long line thru the terminal. I thought Finnish were very orderly, these people looked from the 'eastern bloc'!
On the ferry all of the 'eastern bloc' ran outside to light up cigarettes. It was perfect blue skies and calm for the 90 min crossing across to Estonia.
We passed Helsinki landmarks as we left, similar to the view when I had took the ferry to the fortress island earlier. On arrival at Tallinn its more distinct looking historic skyline became visible.
Oddly there was no passport control at either end. The Tallinn terminal was an odd Soviet era pyramid structure designed to view any advancing attack, now covered in graffiti and a hang out place for the young.
It was a short walk to the old town where I was able to eventually find my hostel near one of the old city gates. I did find an atm so was able to stock up on Euros. The hostel said the walking tour didnt start till noon so I had over an hour to explore on my own first.
