Adventures of a Global Wanderer
This morning we would be leaving Vinales and driving back to Havana for our last day. I felt bad for the family I was staying with as their living conditions were so bare compared to all the luxuries they had provided for the guests. I wanted to leave them a nice tip.
When the cleaning lady (who could be a family member) came she had a small boy with her. I had a large toffee bar leftover in my extra food bag unopened so gave that as a present along with a $1 tip which we were leaving at each Casa. I'm sure they would have all tried it as there are virtually no consumer goods in shops.
We were staying next to a school and I had a pack of choco biscuits also unopened. I decided to give it to the schoolkids as a treat. Normal kids would have devoured it and ripped the box to shreds, I remember my time with my schookids in Korea.
As these kids have grown up with no luxuries in shops they were quite baffled to what the box was and showed no interest. I hope they did open and share it and not just throw it out.
Driving to Havana the highway is deserted as few people own cars or take long trips. We stopped for a bathroom break at a highway stop where many tourists were taking road trips in classic cars. It must have been uncomfortable with no A/C, bumpy roads, and dirt blowing in faces but a more authentic experience.
As we came into Havana we drove thru the Embassy district. The Russian Embassy was a strange tower block looking like a Transformer robot with its arms folded looking down on everyone.
The Embassy district represented the Soviet era with either European or African Embassies. Many of the Embassies were immaculately kept and this would be a good place for a walking tour to admire the homes if they were properly marked on a map.
We then went along the waterfront as we made our way closer to the old town. We then started the process of going to each hotel to drop off luggage but returned to the bus. This was wasting a lot of time. Our hotels were spread all over the central area not like the other towns where we were all on one street.

After dropping everyone's luggage the plan was a walking tour of the old town. I'd already done that on the first day so I was going to leave when we got to my Casa and join them back later.
At the Casa the lady looked surprised to see me. I could understand enough of the Spanish and facial gestures that they had no clue I had a booking here. Neverless they had a room for me so I dumped my stuff before heading off on my own to explore the city.
