From Carnarvon we trekked down to Denham, a little seaside town on the west side of the peninsula from Monkey Mia, near the westerly-most point in Australia. As we are quickly learning, it is very hard to find a place out of the wind at this time of the year, and Denham was no exception. After a few days of getting windblasted, we moved camp to Monkey Mia itself, we figured it was better to get windblasted there, in a more resort-style environment!
We watched the famous Monkey Mia dolphins being handfed by people from the crowd. Unfortunately we weren't among those people, it's a pretty cutthroat sport. We did however get to see a 2 day old baby dolphin, possibly the cutest animal in the world.
Other activities during our stay included: a trip up to Big Lagoon, in the Cape Peron National Park; a visit to Ocean Park - home of lots of sharks, lots of fish, and some cute-but-mossy baby loggerhead turtles; and a cruise to check out the dolphins, dugongs and turtles of Shark Bay. Lea and Lisa tried their hand at boomnetting during this cruise, and were quite pleased that they managed to hang on to their bathers for the whole process, unlike the poor girl down the other end of the boomnet, who lost her bikini top.
Again, the wind got the better of us, so we packed up and headed further south, to get windblasted amongst some different scenery.
