Mission Beach
Arrived in Mission Beach around 4pm, it was a long drive, just over 6 hours. It was overcast with a bit of rain when we arrived. On our drive towards the hotel we kept seeing signs saying to drive slowly because it is a Cassowary conservation area. A Cassowary looks like a cross between an emu and a very large turkey, a funny looking thing. Well we didn't see any until we checked into our hotel and there was a few milling around. The hotel rooms were set amoungst the rain forest, overlooking the beach, really quaint. We drooped off our luggage and went for a drive round the local area.Stopped where there were a few shops and cafe's. Had a wander round to try and find a restaurant for dinner.Well it was so funny, went into this little restaurant which advertised roast dinner and saw a man and asked to see the menu, to which he replied, 'not too much on it, it's here'and pointed to a board that said roast dinner, he said 'I got roast pork, roast lamb and roasted lamb shank, it should be ready around 6pm cause I've only just put the meat in the oven, been out all day', so we said would around 7.30 - 8pm be okay to which he replied 'that's a bit late, I'll have had too much to drink by then cause I've already started'. We said ok through our smiles and walked away laughing! Headed back to the hotel and had a drink in the bar and we decided to eat in the hotel. Next day woke to sunny skies and decided to spend the morning round the pool. Went into town to get lunch, had another look round. Mission Beach town is actually a really small area, it has about four shops that sell clothes and about 6 or 7 cafe's! So in the afternoon we went round the pool again. Walking down the path back to the pool I came across a mother cassowary (she was massive) and her three babies, having been told they could be vicious especially when they have babies I got out of their way!!Unfortunately I didn't have my camera with me and I didn't see any more. That afternoon we spoke with the manager who was a really lovely
guy and he told us of a couple of restaurants to go to, which we may not of found otherwise. Decided not to bother going to the Barrier Reef from here cause not a lot of choice. So we went to the restaurants he told us about on the next two nights, which were good. The next day we lazed round the pool and didn't do much else, we were laying round the pool, in the sunshine, 30 degrees and we could hear thunder in the distance, it was surreal. The thunderstorm finally got us at about 11pm, luckily we'd got back to our room just in time. Thursday morning got up finished the packing and headed off to Port Douglas.
