Ben and Debbies Big Adventure!
We arrived into Bangkok, on our overnight bus, very early in the morning. Feeling very tired and disorientated. We wandered around with our heavy rucksacks trying to figure out how to get to the hostel we had booked. A guy on our bus had suggested we use the riverferry as a cheap option to get us to the south of the city. We eventually found the pier and boarded a boat heading down the river. We got off when instructed and still had a good 20 minute walk. When we finally got to "WE Bangkok" hostel we waited patiently for 2 beds to be made up for us and then crashed out for a few hours. Later on, once we had caught up on sleep, we headed out in search of a cinema. We had been planning a cinema visit for a long time in order to see The Avengers. CentalWorld is a very large, posh shopping complex with a cinema. We made our way here by Skytrain and after indulging in a bit of clothes shopping and pizza eating, we booked tickets for the 7pm showing of the Avengers…. definitely worth the wait!
The following day we used the ferry to get around the city, first visiting the palace and then going on to see the infamous Khoa-san Road - the central backpacker area. This is basically one long road crowded with bars, clubs and shops selling every kind of Thai souvenir. The day was finished off with Ben dragging me to a ping pong show . . . we were both equally unimpressed. The firing of a pin to pop balloons was very impressive but the "cracking an egg trick" was the definite low point of the show and the trip :-/
We spent the morning of our final day in Bangkok finding the train station and booking tickets down to the south peninsula and onto the islands. Once this was sorted we headed to a nearby park and spent the afternoon sleeping under a tree and sitting on the freshly cut grass. That evening we joined 3 Canadian girls, who were staying in the same dorm, on a trip to an open air shopping complex called Asiatique. After having a drink at one of the bars and window shopping in the posh shops, Ben and I headed back and onto the Sirocco hotel. Ben changed out of his shorts and into his long pants (in the middle of the lobby….where else) and then we headed up to the Skybar on the 64th floor. The open air bar is extremely impressive and is also the setting of one of the scenes in The Hangover 2. Although we couldn't indulge in more than 1 of the pricey beverages we enjoyed the atmosphere, posh surroundings and mingling with the "high flyers". We then headed back to the hostel in time for the 1.45am England kick-off. Late night!!
The following day our train wasn't departing until 7pm, so we checked out as late as we could and decided to go to the cinema again to help pass time. Before the film we went to the food court of CentralWorld, which is like a bigger version of the food area in Selfridges. We got two well loaded sandwiches and 2 very naughty muffins to smuggle into the cinema. Promethius was an ok film, but obviously was never going to meet the standards of the original Alien. After the film we still had a bit of time and stopped off for a Starbucks, although later realised we had less time than we thought. An unexpected rainstorm had been going on outside, but inside the large complex we had no idea and had assumed it was still sunny. Amazingly we managed to plot a route across the city to the station via skywalks and metro trains and got their without getting wet and still in time for our train. The train departed at 7pm and guards came round to convert the seats into bunk beds. At 4.45am we arrived at Chumphon and departed the train. We then had to wait until 6am for a bus to take us to the ferry. We boarded the ferry at 7am and after a very rough ride we arrived on the island Koh Tao.
