Dean and I have just arrived in Cambodia after a full on day of travelling. Getting over the boarder from Thailand was an experience in itself. After a nail biting tuk tukride we've stubbled across a nice guest house aptly named 'home sweet home' It also has free internet so we thought we'd update you on the events of last week.
We ended up stay on Koh Tao for a week, the weather was pretty pants but there was loads to do so it didn't really matter. I finished my PADI open water diver course whilst Dean pampered himself with massages (not that kind) and beers on the beach. Not content with being just open water divers we decided to become true pros and take the advanced course.
This saw us master neutral buoyancy (whoo!), do a 30m deep dive, and discover more about fishes and coral and stuff. We also did a night dive which was pretty amazing and a bit bloody scary! With hand held torches as our only source of light and 5 ft waves to compete with it was all a bit James Bond. We saw a massive Barracuda and trigger fish sleeping in a hole being cleaned by cleaner shrimps...probably doesn't sound that exciting but we have a new found passion for all sorts of marine life.
Over the 5 advanced dives we saw loads of cool stuff including blue spotted sting ray, moray eels, scorpian fish, parrot fish and little nemos (clown fish) in their anemones. We think the diver masters prediction on seeing sharks was a little optimistic as we didn't see any over the 9 dives we did in total.
After the excitment of diving we left Koh Tao and headed to Bangkok. Because our visa's were about to expire we only had 2 days in the capital but we are hoping to go back after Chang Mai.
After the 16 hour boat and bus trip we crashed at the first hostel we found which happened to be just off Kohsan Rd. We took full advantage of the cheap food stalls and clothes markets and visited a load of temples. They love a temple over here! They also love trying to get you to go to a late night Ping-Pong shows, but neither of us are in to table tennis so didn't bother.
Similarly to Phuket the tuk tuk drivers take you where ever they fancy, basically wherever they get free petrol or discounts. When they've taken you to maybe 1 place that you've requested and 3 of their mates shops they just leave you to make your own way back. The wierd thing is they haven't even been paid before they leave...very odd. This happened to us twice in Bangkok, we still dont really understand why. We decided not to bother with a third TukTuk and instead took the river boat instead which was a lot calmer and probably a lot safer too!
Anyway we're in Siem Reap now and plan to visit Ankor Wat over the next couple of days. We are also meeting Lou and Rob here which will be nice to catch up and swap stories on everywhere we've been.
Off to have a wander around Siem Reap now so will update you soon.
lots of love
Katie and Dean x
