Today I woke up at about 6am (mostly because it would have been 11:30 in
Melbourne). I was about to head to the gym, but got a call from Richard at
6:15 saying "its clear out, we have to go see the Taj Mahal at sunrise!". So
I changed from gym shorts and got dressed and headed to the lobby. The
concierge told us it was waaaay to foggy for a sunrise and that we couldn't
get in more than once w our tickets. As you can imagine, Antony and Lucy
were not pleased they were woken up!
It was about 5 degrees today... Definitely not what I expected of Indian
weather... I only brought two pairs of pants. The hotel however (the Oberoi)
I think might be the nicest I have ever been in. Maybe its because we
haven't had FS at our beck and call in a couple years, but it is actually
unbelievable.
We were picked up at 9 to go to the TM with our guide. I didn't really know
that much about it before, but it was truly spectacular. It is all carved
out of white marble (brought from 300km away in 1630ish)... It took 20,000
ppl working on it for 22 years. And th best part is that it is absolutely
and completely symetrical in both architecture and design... Except for the
husband's tomb who was placed next to his wife when he died.
We then quickly stopped back at the hotel for the Australians to get more
clothes, then we headed to Agra Fort. It was one of the Mughals 45 palaces
in India. It is 8.5km around, has a water moat ( which had crocs and
alligators), a land moat, with lepards and tigers) and 3 gates!
We then finished with the "Baby Taj" which was another tomb modeled after
the TM.
I am about to head down for dinner to try some other new Indian food for
dinner. Its pretty easy to eat I'm finding because so much of it is all
vegetarian... So how weird could it really be??
Tomorrow we are headed to Jaipur (about a 6 hour drive) in our tourist van.
Jaipur is apparently the best place for markets and shopping... So Lucy is
obviously very excited!
I have taken 150 photos so far, which sounds like a lot until I tell you
that Richard and Lucy have taken about 700 combined!
