Okay, I have to do a culinary rant. I don't know if you are familiar with the Food Network show "The Best Thing I Ever Ate" but if I were asked to go on this show, I now know what I would say.
Just when I thought the world of wraps and pitas could not get any better than the hummus pita from Aroma in Frankfurt am Main, we were introduced to Mustafa's in Berlin. Basically, 3 men in a truck are pumping out Dӧners (pronounced DOO-ner) like an orchestrated dance. The line starts at about 11 in the morning and does not stop until late into the night. It is hard to describe the explosion of flavours that are contained within the walls of the dӧner but I am going to do my best.
First, the vessel itself; instead of a regular pita which breaks and falls apart when overloaded, the gemüse dӧner bun is like a mix between a pita and hamburger which is toasted to perfection. You then choose your sauce which is smeared across both sides - Spicy, Garlic, or Herbed Yogurt. I went extra spicy whereas Ryan combined the other two. Next comes the main which consists of mixed fried vegetables and freshly cut potatoes....yes people, I said fried. The vegetables taste like they have been sautéed in a wok whereas the potato rounds are done to taste Jacque Dubois style. At this point, if you want meat it will be cut from and added to the dӧnner via the giant rotating spit of mystery meat. This alone would probably be good, but the Mustafa men do not stop here. Next is the shredded cabbage and carrots followed by a mixture of chopped cucumber, tomatoes and herbs. On top of this are more leafy greens, a mixture of onions, and then the fantastical herbed goat cheese (yes people, I said cheese). This is not just a sprinkling of toppings either, they pack the dӧnner to the max...these guys to not skimp on size or freshness...everything is top notch which is why I think I like it so much. Finally, just to add that extra punch is a squeeze of fresh lemon juice and more fresh herbs. At this point, it is complete and the only thing left to do is pay the €2.50 it cost....well I guess then you have to eat it too.
So there you have it-The best thing I ever ate and in our 1.5 days in Berlin, Ryan ate 3 of them, and I myself had 2. Another thing which makes this pita amazing is that every bite you take is fantastical. There are no bites in which you are stuck with a mouthful of iceberg lettuce and have to wait until the end where all the good stuff is packed....no...it is good all the way through and I want another one right now.
FYI: The title of this blog posts comes from the fact that Ryan and I did a full Lord of the Rings marathon during our recovery day in Hamburg.
