Our Year of Adventure
Our window in the new room faced East so the first sign of the new day began to brighten our room. It was only 5:30am but David got up to see if there would be a nice sunrise - it was nothing spectacular but good to be awake regardless. There was a real stillness on lake, it was flat calm and the slightest noise seem to carry for miles. As the sun continued to rise behind the mountains, more and more birds started to wake and begin their morning chorus which drowned out the gentle lapping of waves against the cliff.
We decided skip breakfast, well delay breakfast, by walking over the cliff path to the Santa Cruz La Laguna. It was only 45 minutes but it was a pretty steep and rugged path. We had hoped to get some breakfast there but there was nothing grabbing our attention and a lancha bound for Panajachel was just about to leave.
We had a quick breakfast in Atlas, where we were on Thursday, because they had decent coffee and the food was pretty good too. The main reason for visiting 'Pana' was just to get some cash from the ATM to pay our hotel bill tomorrow but there was a market on too. The local market at the top end town was really for locals, they weren't selling anything other than what a local might buy. It was mostly fruit, vegetables and dried fish but also baskets and pots. There were no stalls as such, most traders just sat on the ground and spread their wares around themselves - this made walking round the really busy market all the harder.
Close to the market, there was a barber shop and David was in need of a haircut, not that it was close to pony tail stage, just annoying and needed a trim. Two neatly dressed barbers were doing great jobs with the hair of the customers already in the chair while and older woman (who didn't care about much for her appearance - ok, she was really obese) swept up the hair around them. When it was David's turn, he sat in the chair and that barber left the shop. The older woman was getting instruction from the other barber while he set up the clippers. She started by 'combing' his 5mm long hair and then decided to take her glasses off and squinted a few times. This could go two ways - it's either going to be cut well or David would be shaving his head when he got home...it turned out well thankfully.
It was our last afternoon at Lake Atitlan so we decided to relax in the sun and have a swim, we would after all be spending the best part of following week in a very busy city.
