Our Year of Adventure
At breakfast, on the other side of the room, we overhead a Sottish accent amongst all the Canadian ones - we would have a chat with him later. Later in the day, we bumped into each other in San Pedro and had a quick chat. We quickly discovered that Gordon was born in Glasgow, was a Rangers fan and now living overseas - the same as David. Gordon had spent two years working in Auckland before moving to Canada, he was still in Canada 8 years later with his partner, Sarah, from Ireland.
Long story, just a bit shorter...Gordon still has a soft spot for New Zealand and wanted to talk and reminisce about his time there...
Gordon: My local was the Copper something, what was it called?
David/Maria: That's called the Elephant Wrestler now, probably the best bar in Takapuna.
G: What's the first road that comes from the motorway into Takapuna, Hurstmere?
D/M: No, it's Esmonde Road- we used to live on that road
G: No kidding, that's where I lived
D/M: Haha what are the chances - what number were you?
G: Oh, I can't remember
D/M: We lived on the left, the second lot of houses
G: I was on the left, down a driveway with four houses, I was the house on the bottom right, facing the mangroves
D/M: That sounds a bit like where we lived
Sarah: This is unreal, you can't have lived in the same house
D/M: We were 41A
G: I was just about to say that, I wish I said that first
S: No way
G: The house had a door on the side, went onto kitchen/living room with a deck on side overlooking the mangroves
D/M: That sounds like it's not changed since you were there
G: If you turned right and first left, there was a bedroom opposite the laundry, that was my room. And you would be in the bedroom right at the end
D/M: Yep, it's definetly the same house
S: OMG!! That is unbelievable
D/M: That is weird eh, what are the chances of meeting another Scotsman in Guatamala who used to live in the same house as you in New Zealand
S: This is so weird...
The conversation carried on for a bit about the owners of house and the neighbours and there is absolutely no doubt that we both lived in the same house. We also discovered that a cat had been buried in the back garden...that explained the cat flap that we were always curious about. Our landlord had a Jack Russell terrier and we always wondered whether it used it or not.
