Our Year of Adventure
We decided to leave the curtains of our room open last night, we had no neighbors looking in and we wanted to see drawn break over the lake. We didn't quite mange the sunrise but when we woke the view from our bed was simply amazing...a flat, calm lake with the San Pedro volcano sitting behind.
Before breakfast, David went snorkeling around the submerged terraces. The water was 22c, so warm enough to go in without a wetsuit but chilly enough to make you catch your breath when you first get in. Visibility was surprisingly good and and it was easy to see the lake dropped sharply below the underwater terraces. In the past, it would have been possible (and fun) to jump or dive off the terrace walls into the lake below.
After breakfast, we took a double kayak out for an hour to see a bit more of the lakeside. The lake was still like a millpond when we pushed off from the jetty and had a pleasant 30 minutes paddling west admiring the mountains from the water. In the blink of eye, the wind picked up from the far side of lake and there was suddenly a half meter swell with whitecaps. In hindsight, we had seen the water like this when we arrived yesterday and somebody had mentioned that the water changes from calm to choppy at midday. It was almost to the minute today and we had a less pleasant paddle to the jetty and no photos of the hotel from the water either.
It is very easy to be lazy here and we were, for most of the afternoon we sunbathed and read books. We eventually summoned enough enthusiasm to take a walk to the nearby village of Jabalito. There wasn't much to see but we managed to get a little bit of exercise.
We were supposed to be checking out tomorrow morning and needed to find a place to stay for 2 nights before moving on to Antigua. The lake is nice and we wanted to explore a bit more of it but we also wanted to stay here. Fortunately, they have one room left so it will only be moving rooms, not hotels.
