Our Year of Adventure
When we started this trip back in January last year, we seemed to have all the time in the world. We had a few flights booked to get around Scandinavia and the UK and, of course, the flight to Mexico to start the adventure properly. Once in Mexico though, we simply took each day as it came, we had nine months to get to Argentina so why plan too much ahead of time. Admittedly, the last few weeks in South America were a bit frantic as we tried to cram in as much as possible before our absolute deadline – the flight back to Europe from Buenos Aires.
Once back in Europe, we were taking it easy again. No rush to get up the morning, no strict plans of where to be and when. That was, until now…
Our flights back to New Zealand were bought a couple of days ago and the last two days have been all about 'returning to New Zealand'. Reading this you might think that flights are all that’s needed, but for us it’s not that simple.
For starters, our flight departs from Helsinki which is 700 kilometres to the south and the majority of our luggage is another 200 kilometres north in Venejärvi, deep inside the Arctic Circle.
We also need to work out where we are going to live and where we are going to work when we get back.
The travel to Helsinki was sorted out fairly easily by booking the overnight train from Kemi to Helsinki on Saturday night. With the extra luggage we have, 3 big bags and a snowboard, we decided it was easier to take it on the train than fly and pay for the extra weight. We have our own sleeping cabin so with a bit of luck it will be a comfortable journey.
As for work, David had already advised his company that he would be returning to New Zealand, as contractually agreed and would be available for work on the 26th of January. Late last night due to the difference in time zones, he spoke with the HR department re-affirming he will be back. Hopefully there will be some roles available.
Maria spent the majority of the last 2 days trawling through all the rental property agencies. While it might be nice to go back to Takapuna, we have sort of decided that we should move into an apartment in the city centre for a bit while we find out where we will be working. If we both end up working ‘south of the bridge’, it would kill us trying to get there in the morning traffic from Takapuna on the North Shore.
