Our Year of Adventure
Our bed in Kemi was a big air mattress in the living room. When we say big, we mean big. It was a proper double bed size and about 50cm high, the air went in using the inbuilt electrically operated pump so it actually felt like a proper bed.
That was until about 3am though, when we woke with the feeling that we were in a water bed. It had lost a lot of air during the previous 3 hours, we were sagging down and when one of us moved, the other one got bounced around. We got out of bed and turned the pump on to fill it again before going back to sleep. We managed to sleep through to the morning, but the mattress had lost a lot of air again.
We took a walk into town and to keep our minds off the weather, it was snowing and really windy, David decided to learn a bit more Finnish. Up to now, David's linguistic abilities will allow him to order between one and four beers at a time. Why he would want to order more than four beers at a time remains a mystery, but the learning of numbers 5 to 10 began.
Finnish words in general are not that easy and the numbers are definitely not straight forward, especially when they have three syllables. All was going pretty well until we reached eight. At least David was still on eight, but Maria had moved on to nine without telling him. Only the first syllable of word for eight and nine differ and David was practising nine thinking it was eight and had just misheard Maria to begin with. Long story short, we laughed about the missing eight, got to ten and then started on the swear words instead…
That’s not actually true because David already knew them. David did run through all the words in Finnish he knew and it was surprisingly quite a few although mostly related to alcohol and food.
The main reason for walking into town was for Maria to pick up her new credit from the bank, but they had sent it to a different branch. It was waiting in Kemimaa, 8km away. We would have to drive there on Monday.
We had a look around a couple of shops for any ski jackets that were in the sale and some jeans for David. The pair he has and the only pair he has had all year, have finally worn through in **** and are way beyond repair. The shops only seemed to have 'skinny’ jeans and whilst David isn’t fat as such, the skinny jeans look just doesn’t suit him.
On the brighter side, a hole had been found in the air mattress and repaired so tonight we should hopefully have uninterrupted sleep.
