Our Year of Adventure
It had taken a good 30 minutes to stagger up the snowy streets from the nightclub so by the time we got in and finally to bed, it was closer to 5am. Waking up at midday seemed way too early and with a hangover kicking in, bed seemed like the best place to be.
On teh other hand, it also seemed like a waste of a day so with a couple of painkillers, a shower and few cups of coffee, we (or David particularly) managed to face the day instead. Katja came over with some friends who had been staying at Venejärvi and asked if we wanted to join them at the Ski Centre 'kota' (a closed shelter like a tepee with a fire pit) to cook sausages. When you’re hangover, what could be better than cooking sausages over an open fire and eating them.
Jouni, a guy who used to work with Maria (and David knows from the Sauna Club), came in to cook salmon traditional way, loimulohi. He took a couple of large wooden boards and covered them in tin foil, to which he then used wooden pegs to ‘nail’ an entire side of salmon to the board before being seasoned. The fire was built high and the salmon boards laid vertically with the fish facing the heat. It would take about an hour to cook and as nice as it looked, and would probably taste, we weren’t waiting around that long.
We had a nap in the afternoon after Katja’s group had left to go back to Venejärvi and the others were still out.
Feeling refreshed after our power nap, we went out for dinner with Torsti, Virpi and Matias to Julli's, but it was packed with a waiting time of one hour so we went to Rouhe instead. Rouhe was busy too, but we could at least get a table straight away. David had never been here before and was surprised by the House Pizza - Snail and Chorizo. Easy decision for David, he loves the strangest food that can be found on menus. Maria went for the safer and more straight-forward Salmon. Both were delicious and despite how busy the restaurant was, the food came pretty quickly.
